# Energy bulk panel from owid/energy-data

`GET /api/v1/owid/energy-bulk`

Filtered slice of the `owid/energy-data` cross-country panel on GitHub. Return rows for one indicator column (e.g. `renewables_share_energy`, `electricity_generation`, `primary_energy_consumption`, `energy_per_capita`) optionally filtered by country and year range. Data originates from BP Statistical Review, Ember, and the IEA; OWID harmonises country codes and units. Licence: CC BY 4.0 with upstream attribution.

## Query parameters

- `indicator` string — Column name in owid-energy-data.csv (e.g. `renewables_share_energy`, `electricity_generation`, `primary_energy_consumption`, `energy_per_capita`).
- `country` string, nullable — Country name (case-insensitive) or ISO3 code. None returns the cross-country panel.
- `start_year` integer, nullable — Inclusive start year. Defaults to 2015 if both unset.
- `end_year` integer, nullable — Inclusive end year. Defaults to latest.

## Response `200`

Filtered energy-data rows plus a CC BY 4.0 attribution block naming the upstream providers.

- EnvelopeOwidEnergyBulkPayload
  - `data` OwidEnergyBulkPayload, required — Bulk energy panel response.
    - `source` string — OWID GitHub bulk source identifier.
    - `indicator` string, nullable — Indicator requested.
    - `country` string, nullable — Country filter applied (None = cross-country).
    - `rows` OwidEnergyBulkRow[], required — Filtered energy-data rows.
      - `country` string, required — Country name from the bulk panel.
      - `code` string, nullable — ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 code.
      - `year` integer, nullable — Observation year.
      - `date` string, nullable — Date column if present (unused for energy-data).
      - `indicator` string, nullable — Indicator column name requested by the caller (e.g. `renewables_share_energy`).
      - `value` union — Indicator value. Numeric when parseable, empty string when absent.
        - number
        - integer
        - string
    - `count` integer, required — Number of rows returned.
    - `attribution` OwidAttribution, required — CC BY 4.0 dual-attribution block returned in every OWID envelope.
      - `licence` string — Licence of the OWID-curated data.
      - `attribution` string, required — Ready-to-render attribution string naming Our World in Data and the original upstream source.
      - `source_name` string, nullable — Short name of the primary upstream source (e.g. 'UN WPP (2024)', 'World Bank', 'V-Dem (2025)').
      - `citation_short` string, nullable — OWID-provided short citation.
      - `citation_long` string, nullable — OWID-provided long citation suitable for academic use.
  - `meta` SugraMeta, required — Metadata attached to every /api/v1/* response envelope.
    - `endpoint` string, required — Requested endpoint path.
    - `data_time` string, required — ISO 8601 UTC timestamp of the source data, not of the request.
    - `response_time` string, required — ISO 8601 UTC timestamp when this response was produced.
    - `provider` string, required — API name and version.
    - `source` string, nullable — Identifier of the primary upstream source used for this response.
    - `attribution` string, nullable — Human-readable attribution mandated by an upstream source (e.g. a securities regulator or self-regulatory organization). Present only on responses whose source requires the owner and source to be clearly identified. Do not remove or alter it when using the response.
    - `fallback_used` boolean, nullable — True when the primary source failed and a fallback produced the data.
    - `fallback_chain` string[], nullable — Ordered list of sources attempted, in the order they were tried.
    - `cached` boolean, nullable — True when this response was served from the internal cache.
    - `stale` boolean, nullable — True when the cached response was returned after the upstream rate-limited or errored. Clients can use this to detect degraded data.

## Other responses

- `401` — Missing or invalid `x-api-key` header. JSON body with a stable `code` distinguishing `missing_api_key` (no header sent) from `invalid_api_key` (header sent, key not accepted); any other 401 source carries the generic `unauthorized` with its detail as `reason`. Plus `hint`. `plan` is always null on 401 - an unauthenticated request has no plan; quota exhaustion is 429, not 401.
- `422` — Validation Error
- `429` — Daily rate limit exceeded. Check `X-RateLimit-Reset` for the next window.
- `503` — Upstream source is temporarily unavailable. Retry after a short delay.
