# Update a Preprints Institutional Affilation

`PUT /preprints/{preprint_id}/relationships/institutions/`

Updates an institution affilation to a Preprint, effectively creating or removing a relationship between the Preprint and that user's affilation to the Preprint.
#### Required
A relationship object with a `data` key, containing the `institutions` type and valid institution ID is required.
All attributes describing the relationship between the Preprint and the institution are optional.
#### Returns
Returns a JSON object with a `data` key containing the representation of the new institution, if the request is successful.
If the request is unsuccessful, an `errors` key containing information about the failure will be returned. Refer to the [list of error codes](#tag/Errors-and-Error-Codes) to understand why this request may have failed.
