# Partially update env_var

`PATCH /v1/env_var/{env_var_id}`

Partially update an env_var object. Specify the fields to update in the payload. Any object-type fields will be deep-merged with existing content. Currently we do not support removing fields or setting them to null.

## Path parameters

- `env_var_id` string, uuid, required — EnvVar id

## Request body

- object
  - `name` string, required — The name of the environment variable
  - `value` string, nullable — The value of the environment variable. Will be encrypted at rest.

## Response `200`

Returns the env_var object

- EnvVar
  - `id` string, uuid, required — Unique identifier for the environment variable
  - `object_type` 'organization' | 'project' | 'function', required — The type of the object the environment variable is scoped for
  - `object_id` string, uuid, required — The id of the object the environment variable is scoped for
  - `name` string, required — The name of the environment variable
  - `created` string, date-time, nullable — Date of environment variable creation
  - `used` string, date-time, nullable — Date the environment variable was last used

## Other responses

- `400` — The request was unacceptable, often due to missing a required parameter
- `401` — No valid API key provided
- `403` — The API key doesn’t have permissions to perform the request
- `429` — Too many requests hit the API too quickly. We recommend an exponential backoff of your requests
- `500` — Something went wrong on Braintrust's end. (These are rare.)
