# Update artifact state

`PUT /groups/{groupId}/artifacts/{artifactId}/state`

Updates the state of the artifact. For example, you can use this to mark the latest version of an artifact as `DEPRECATED`. The operation changes the state of the latest version of the artifact, even if this version is `DISABLED`. If multiple versions exist, only the most recent is changed.

This operation can fail for the following reasons:

* No artifact with this `artifactId` exists (HTTP error `404`)
* A server error occurred (HTTP error `500`)

## Request body

- UpdateState
  - `state` 'ENABLED' | 'DISABLED' | 'DEPRECATED', required — Describes the state of an artifact or artifact version. The following states are possible: * ENABLED * DISABLED * DEPRECATED

## Response `204`

Returned when the operation was successful.

## Other responses

- `400` — Common response for all operations that can return a `400` error.
- `401` — Common response for all operations that can return a `401` error indicating authentication is required.
- `403` — Common response for all operations that can return a `403` error indicating the user is authenticated but not authorized.
- `404` — Common response for all operations that can return a `404` error.
- `500` — Common response for all operations that can fail with an unexpected server error.
